NECESSITIES OF LIFE NOTES:

- Essential Question:

What do scientists consider to be the necessities of life? (needs for survival)

1. What does every living thing need in order to survive?

- Every living thing needs water, a place to live and food to survive.

- Most living things also need air in order to survive.

2. Why is water a necessity for life?

-70% of most cells is made out of water.

- Most metabolism chemical reactions require water.

- Organisms need different amounts of water & get water in different ways.

- Organisms can get water from the fluids they drink and the food they eat.

- Humans can survive for about 3 days without water.

- Metabolism = sum of all chemical processes that occur in an organism.

3. Do all organisms need air for survival?

- Aerobic Organisms need air. (Most Organisms.)

- Anaerobic Organisms do not need air. (Example = Some Bacteria.)

4. What type of place do organisms need to live?
- All organisms need a place to live that has all of the things the organism needs to survive.
- Some organisms need a large space, while others need a small space to live.
- Limited space leads to competition.
5. How do organisms get their food?
- Not all organisms get their food in the same way.
- Producer = An organism that can make its own food by using energy from its surroundings. (Uses photosynthesis)
- Consumer = An organism that eats other organisms or organic matter. (Doesn't use photosynthesis.)
- Decomposer = An organism that gets energy by breaking down the remains of dead organisms or animal wastes & consuming or absorbing the nutrients. (Doesn't use photosynthesis.)
6. What is homeostasis?
- The maintenance of a constant internal state in a changing environment.
Example = Stable internal temperature.
